Bartels found that only 38 of Germany's 114 high-tech Eurofighter jets are operational, Deutsche Welles reported. It also has 93 Tornado fighter jets, but only 29 of them work. The number of German soldiers was around 600,000 at the end of the Cold War in the early 1990s. Today the country has just 177,000.

These deficiencies have led to embarrassing episodes among the few foreign missions in which German forces are currently deployed. Last week, the German tabloid newspaper Bild revealed that six of the country's Tornado jets that are conducting reconnaissance missions against the Islamic State in Syria cannot fly at night because their cockpit lights are too bright for their pilots' eyes.

The neglected state of Germany's military isn't new — but in a sense that makes it even more shocking. The wealthy, notoriously efficient country has tolerated a poorly equipped military for years.

Last year, a report from the German broadcaster ARD set off a wave of press coverage saying that German troops used broomsticks that had been painted black to stand in for heavy machine guns during a NATO training exercise.  :fp2 :fp2 :fp2

In 2014, Der Spiegel magazine called the Bundeswehr "ramshackle." In 2011, Bild published an exposéciting internal government reports in which commanders complained that German troops in Afghanistan didn't know how to use their weapons.

:gigi:

Так отож:

"In an unusually stinging speech, made on his valedictory visit to Europe before he retires at the end of the month, Gates condemned European defense cuts and said the United States is tired of engaging in combat missions for those who “don’t want to share the risks and the costs.
...
... budget cuts and sheer reluctance among European partners to fight have made the missions significantly more difficult and shifted the burden onto the United States.
...
NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen shares Gates’s concerns about European willingness to contribute to its own defense, an alliance spokeswoman said. “There is clearly a long-standing concern about the transatlantic gap in defense spending,” Oana Lungescu told reporters in Brussels."

Ні: "вони мало витрачали на оборону протягом останніх 20+ років".

WASHINGTON –  The chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee assailed Pentagon officials on Wednesday for relying on Russian rocket engines to launch American military satellites into space, arguing that the practice enriches friends of President Vladimir Putin and puts U.S. national security in jeopardy.

"Today Russia holds many of our most precious national security satellites at risk before they ever get off the ground," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said at a hearing to examine military space launch capabilities.

Yet McCain said the Pentagon has actively sought to undermine the committee's direction to limit that risk and end the use of the Russian RD-180 engines by the end of this decade. McCain also blamed the U.S. contractor that acquires the engines, United Launch Alliance, and two senators who support the company, Richard Shelby, R-Ala., and Dick Durbin, D-Ill., for thwarting the committee's instructions.

Air Force Secretary Deborah James told the committee the department is working to end the use of the Russian engines as soon as possible. She said disengaging from use of the Russian engines is far more complicated than it appears. She recommended a stockpile of 18 of the RD-180s until an American-made rocket can be tested and fielded.

McCain and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., are introducing legislation Thursday to repeal a provision in law that they say allows the unlimited acquisition and use of RD-180 engines, which are manufactured by NPO Energomash. The manufacturer is owned primarily by the Russian government and controlled by several of Putin's confidants, according to the lawmakers.
