Someone once said, “What good is a handsome new suit if the man inside of it is rotten!?”
Now that is a pretty bold statement—but a statement, nonetheless, that speaks to the issue of style versus substance.
The style-versus-substance debate has been around for a long time—and today there remains much evidence that our culture continues to reward style (otherwise known as glitz, entertainment, fashion, popularity or beauty) over substance (otherwise known as truth, benefit, principle, integrity or character). You get the picture.
And today, whether we talk about advertising, fame or even one’s self-image—we see the sad reality that the majority of people are far more influenced by the “image”—style or outward appearance of things rather than the real redeeming value or substance of that thing or person!
So what about you? Where are you in the style-versus-substance debate? What do your choice of clothing and cars, your focus on your looks and beauty, and the way you spend your time indicate about your values when it comes to style versus substance?
It’s a question worth asking.
